Changes for imports into the UK in 2024
The United Kingdom is gradually implementing its new Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) starting from January 31, 2024, introducing additional customs rules and checks for exporting goods to the UK. The implementation will occur in multiple stages.
January 31, 2024: Health certification
The first step for exporters will be obtaining health certificates for the shipment of animal, plant, and plant-based products to the UK. This requirement applies to products with medium to high health risks for humans, animals, and nature. Examples include fresh, cooled, or frozen meat products, animal food containing animal products, sea animals, fish products, and other goods with animal products.
April 30, 2024: Physical checks
From this date, UK customs will begin physically inspecting import products using Border Control Posts (BCP) located at UK ports and airports.
October 31, 2024: Safety and Security declarations
Starting on October 31, 2024, a Safety and Security declaration will be required for all import shipments from the EU. Carriers will handle this declaration, but accurate information, including a copy of the health certificate, must be provided beforehand.
